How to Disable IPv6 on Windows Server (Step-by-Step Guide)

IPv6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol and is enabled by default on most modern networks. However, in some cases, you may want to disable it—especially when troubleshooting network issues or removing unnecessary protocols.

This guide walks you through the process of disabling IPv6 on a Windows Server in a clear, step-by-step manner.

How to Disable IPv6 on Windows Server

Why You Might Want to Disable IPv6?

Step-by-Step: Disabling IPv6

The following instructions apply to Windows Server 2016, 2019, and 2022.

1. Open Server Manager

Click the Server Manager icon on the taskbar or search for it in the Start menu.

2. Go to Local Server

In the left menu, select Local Server.

3. Access Network Connections

On the right side, locate the Properties section and click the IP address link next to your Ethernet adapter.

This opens the Network Connections window.

4. Open the Adapter Properties

Double-click the network connection you want to modify (typically named “Ethernet”) and click Properties.

5. Uncheck IPv6

In the list of items, find Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and clear the checkbox to disable it.

6. Save Changes

Click OK to close the window and apply the changes.

Tips

You may need to restart the network connection or the server for the changes to fully take effect.

To re-enable IPv6 in the future, simply return to the same settings and check the box again.

By following these steps, you can easily disable IPv6 on your Windows Server.

This can be especially helpful when working with legacy networks, addressing compatibility issues, or simplifying your network configuration.
